The Dressage at Devon Breed Show held annually at Devon, PA, is the country’s largest and most prestigious show of its kind. Simply placing in the ribbons at this show is quite an honor. But this year Paul Cohen of Associations Underwriters & Ziplow Horse Insurance (AUZHI) added a new dimension to this time-honored venue.
In an effort to promote breeders in the region, Cohen, long time supporter of the Mid-Atlantic Hanoverian Breeders Club (MAHB), announced the creation of the AUZHI-MAHB Awards consisting of two $1000 cash prizes for registered Hanoverians bred by MAHB members. The awards were presented for the first time at the 2007 DAD Breed Show, September 26-27.
Guidelines for the awards are: $1000 to the high-placing registered Hanoverian bred by a MAHB member and entered in its respective open in-hand class of the Young Horse Division at Devon and another $1000 to the high-placing Hanoverian in the Mature Horse Division (also bred by a MAHB member); the awards to be split equally between owner and breeder. The owner need not be a current MAHB member. Mr. Cohen has designated these awards as annual events at DAD with the possibility of adding a similar award in the future for under-saddle horses in the breeding division.
In this inaugural year, the money went to two dedicated, long-standing MAHB members. The Young Horse award was won by the two-year-old filly Rheporter (Royal Prince-EM Whispre/Weltmeyer) owned and bred by Mo Swanson of Rolling Stone Farm, Slatington, PA. The Mature Horse winner was the five-year-old mare Ghlacier (Gold Luck-Piper/Pablo) bred by Mo Swanson and owned by Lauren Dearlove of Parade Field Farm, Lovettsville, VA.
It is anticipated that more owners of MAHB-bred Hanoverians will want to vie for the prizes next year, and breeders will receive some well deserved recognition. After all, every successful horse, whether Grand Prix jumper, Dressage competitor or child’s Hunter, had its genesis in the mind and heart of the breeder. Paul Cohen hopes these awards will serve to highlight and reward these efforts.
