Important Notice Regarding Frozen Semen Use of
non-Hanoverian, VhW-approved Stallions

At the 2005 AHS Annual Meeting it was announced that the proposed breeding rule changes and required bylaw changes regarding the use of non-Hanoverian, VhW-approved stallions had been approved by a referendum vote of the membership. It was previously recommended and subsequently passed by the AHS Board that those non-Hanoverian, VhW-approved stallions which produced foals from frozen semen and which were issued AHS papers between 1980 and 2005 be entered into the AHS stallion book.

A listing of current non-Hanoverian, VhW-approved stallions for which the AHS will issue foal registration papers appears below. The stallions have made it onto this list one of two ways:

They either have AHS registered progeny that were conceived through the use of frozen semen from 1980-2004, OR

They are younger horses already approved by the Mare & Stallion committee based upon performance

Mare owners who wish to breed using frozen semen from non- Hanoverian, VhW-approved stallions which are NOT currently on the AHS approved list must make application to the AHS to determine if the stallion will be eligible.

To inquire about a stallion not currently on the list, contact Executive Director Hugh Bellis-Jones, HBJAHS@aol.com at the AHS Central Office to discuss application for a particular stallion. The mare owner will be held responsible for knowing whether or not the resulting foal will be eligible for registration papers. Mare owners who wish to breed an AHS approved mare to a non-Hanoverian, VhW-approved stallion must be familiar with rule §4, (2) regarding the required 50 percent (50%) of Hanoverian blood in the dam’s pedigree in order for registration papers to be issued to the prospective foal.

Criteria

The following criteria were established for adding stallions to the approved list. This proposal has been approved by the AHS Board. In order for a stallion to be added to the list, he must have a breeding value of 120 in dressage or show jumping, and a breeding value of at least 100 in riding horse points from the Jahrbuch Hengste which records results from mare inspections and mare performance tests. For stallions that are not yet old enough to have a breeding value, the requirement will be an exceptionally good performance record as determined by the Mare & Stallion Committee.

It is important to note that non-Hanoverian stallions, with the exception of Thoroughbreds, now presented to the VhW in Germany must have a score of 7.5 on their stallion licensing to gain Hanoverian approval. The same requirement of a 7.5 for non-Hanoverian stallions with the exception of Thoroughbreds, presented to the AHS for licensing in this country was also among the proposed breeding rule changes passed by the referendum vote in the fall of 2004.

History Behind the Change:

During the 2004 AHS annual meeting, the Mare and Stallion Committee met together with Dr. Jochen Wilkens and Dr. Ludwig Christmann of the VhW to discuss some important issues concerning AHS breeding rules and to make recommendations for several policy changes as well as some breeding rule changes. Breeding rule changes require bylaw changes, which must be approved by a referendum vote of the membership, and must be approved by a two-thirds majority vote of eligible members voting, provided that at least 20 percent or more of eligible members vote.

The most significant of the changes concerned the acceptance into our stallion book of non-Hanoverian stallions approved by the VhW whose frozen semen is being imported into the United States and used for the breeding of Hanoverian mares in this country. These stallions include such horses as Caprimond, Don Primero, Donnerhall, Hohenstein, Rohdiamant, Rubinstein and Sandro Hit to name just a few. Under the previous rules, if any of these stallions had been imported to the United States, they would have been subject to inspection by the AHS Mare and Stallion Committee and could have been rejected.

At the time we had a list of 31 stallions whose offspring, bred from frozen semen, had been registered by the AHS. We therefore had a situation existing in which foals by non-AHS approved stallions were issued AHS papers. It was unanimously agreed that this system of dealing with non- Hanoverian, VhW-approved stallions had to be changed. If a foal has been issued registration papers by the AHS, the sire, by implication, has been accepted into the AHS stallion book. It was agreed that non-Hanoverian, VhW-approved stallions whose foals had already been issued AHS papers, must be accepted into the AHS studbook without inspection. It was recommended and subsequently passed by the AHS Board that those non- Hanoverian, VhW-approved stallions which produced foals from frozen semen and which were issued AHS papers between 1980 and 2005 be entered into the AHS stallion book.

Dr. Wilkens and Dr. Christmann advised the Committee that German stallion owners have been informed that non-Hanoverian, VhW-approved stallions may not necessarily be approved by the AHS. The above proposals required a number of bylaw changes and were submitted to the membership during the election of officers in the fall of 2004, and were subsequently passed.
